This species was once widespread from the Arkansas River to the Platte, but now occupies less than 1% of its historical river range. It is currently listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Mining in the native river basins lead to sediment and toxic runoff water has led to the decline, along with overfishing and water diversion for agriculture.
